about me
Clara Dossetter:
student, actor, writer, human.
My name is Clara Dossetter, and I am a member of the University of Michigan class of 2023 currently earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the School of Music, Theatre, & Dance, and a minor in writing through the Sweetland Center for Writing.
In the experiment that is my life so far, acting is the test but writing is the constant. I believe that writing is one of the few ways, if not the only way, that my word is taken seriously. While speaking, I tend to lean towards the jokes and giggles as part of a massive desire to be liked. With writing, however, my words can speak of themselves – no additives, no fluff, just me and my ideas.

In fact, when my eldest brother, Jeremy, passed away in October of my junior year of high school, I believe it was writing that allowed me to keep speaking. I could not bring myself to talk to my parents or friends too much about what I saw or what I was going through. I was in slight denial of my grief. So, I started writing. I wrote about him, about my family, about the first shower I took after I found out. I wrote how I felt. I read those pieces to my parents, through which a great channel for empathy and connection was founded. In this way, I believe that writing saved me.

Nowadays, when I am experiencing something that I don’t know how to speak about, I simply write it down. But, it goes much further than that. These days, I call myself a writer and want to work professionally in some capacity.
My interests as a writer range to everything from narrative nonfiction to screenplay, and I even have an ambition of writing a novel someday. I’m an avid reader, and my interest in books happens to be just as broad as that for my writing. (checkout Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry if you’re into westerns or The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by David Auburn if you have a sci-fi funny bone) As of now, a dream would be to work as a profiler for a magazine or a writer-actor for a sitcom. In my eyes, the world is my oyster! (Did I mention that I’m chronically over-confident?)
